01

We are not a lender

Our website operates a loan-matching service, not a lender, and does not make loans, make credit decisions, or broker loans on behalf of any lender. A 4 pillar funding request is shared with lenders in our network that decide whether to offer you credit.

We do not set interest rates, fees or repayment terms, and we never collect loan payments. Any loan you accept is a contract between you and the lender. Submitting a request does not obligate you to accept an offer, and you will never pay us a fee to use the service.

02

How compensation works

Lenders, lending networks and marketing partners pay us for referrals, usually when a request is passed to them or when a borrower takes a step such as completing an application or accepting a loan.

Those payments are how we keep the service free for borrowers. The amount we receive may differ from one lender to another and may change over time. Compensation does not increase the rate or fees a lender charges you, and no lender pays us to change the payment estimates or cost explanations in our guides.

03

How compensation may affect which offers appear

Compensation may influence which lenders receive your request, which offers appear, and the order in which they are shown, alongside factors such as your state, loan amount, credit profile and lender availability.

Because of this, the first offer you see is not necessarily the lowest-cost option for you. Compare each offer on its APR, total amount repaid, fees and term. The same $2,000 over 12 months costs about $174.89 a month at 8.99% APR and about $200.91 a month at 35.99% APR (estimate), a difference of more than $310 over the year.

04

We don't include every lender

Our network includes a limited group of lenders and does not represent every lender, loan product or rate available in the market.

Banks, credit unions and other online lenders that are not in our network may offer terms that suit you better. Members of a credit union may have access to small-dollar loans with lower APRs. Checking at least one source outside our network is a reasonable step, and our compare lenders page explains what to look for when you do.

05

Rates, terms and the representative example

Lenders set every rate, fee and term, and lenders in personal-loan markets generally quote APRs from about 6% to 35.99% with terms of about 6 to 36 months (estimate).

Your APR depends on factors such as your credit history, income, debt-to-income ratio, loan amount, term and state of residence. Some lenders charge an origination fee, which may be deducted from the amount you receive.

Representative example (estimate)Amount
Amount borrowed$2,000
Term12 months
APR (fixed rate, no fees)24.99%
Monthly paymentAbout $190.08
Total repaid$2,280.96
Total interest$280.96

The example is for illustration only and is not an offer. Your actual rate and payment may be higher or lower. See our rates page and the glossary entry on representative examples for more detail.

06

State availability and credit checks

Lender participation, loan amounts and terms vary by state, and some lenders do not serve every state, so offers may not be available where you live.

State laws cap rates and set rules for small loans differently, which is why two borrowers with similar credit in different states may see different offers. Submitting a request may involve a soft credit check, which does not affect your credit score. If you continue with a lender, it may run a hard credit inquiry before final approval, which may have a small, temporary effect on your score. Lenders may also verify your identity, income and bank account through consumer reporting agencies.

07

No guarantee of approval or funding

Submitting a request does not guarantee that you will receive an offer, be approved, or receive funds by a particular time, because each lender applies its own approval standards.

When a lender does approve a loan, funds are often deposited as soon as the next business day, but timing depends on the lender and your bank (estimate). Loan amounts available through the network range from $500 to $5,000, and a lender may offer less than you requested. Read the eligibility guidelines to see what lenders commonly look for.

Tips for borrowing responsibly

Personal loans work best for a defined need, a payment that fits your budget, and a clear plan to repay on schedule, so compare the full cost before accepting any offer.

  • Borrow only what you need; a smaller amount or shorter term reduces total interest.
  • Read the loan agreement for late fees, returned-payment fees and any prepayment penalty.
  • Ask whether the lender reports payments to credit bureaus, since on-time payments may help your credit.
  • Contact your lender early if you expect to miss a payment and ask about hardship options.
  • Consider alternatives such as a payment plan with the provider, a credit union loan or a nonprofit credit counselor.

You can model payments at different amounts and terms with our personal loan calculator before you submit a request.
